Who is Batman?

Batman pose

Batman, the man behind the black mask and leather suit who saves the day and protects Gotham City each night. He’s a hero, yes, but besides that who is he really? Between 1989 and 2008 six films were made about Batman and his many crusades, villains and more. In each movie we learned a little bit more about the man known as Bruce Wayne by day and Batman by night. He was played by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, and Christian Bale. Each actor brought out a different side of the character and made you want to learn more.

One of the things that makes Batman stand out compared to other superheroes if that he doesn’t have any superhuman skills or mutant qualities. He is a normal guy trying to help out his city and do right by people. This stems from witnessing his parents being murdered as a child. He wanted to make sure no one else would ever have to see the horrible things he did as a kid and thus set out to fight crime. He uses his intelligence, physical agility, intimidation, wealth and lots of great technical gadgets to complete his missions and protect the city. As a millionaire entrepreneur of Wayne Enterprises his lifestyle allows for him to take off when he needs and fund all his operations namely the expensive cars, surveillance equipment and gadgets his assistants make.

We have learned that he is in love with Rachel Dawes, his dear friend and confidant who knows his true identity. However she can never be with him as long as he is Batman because that sort of relationship simply wouldn’t work. In the latest film, The Dark Knight, we learn a lot more about who Batman or Bruce Wayne really is. Director Christopher Nolan delves deep into the psychological ramifications of what being Batman does to a man and how he wishes deep down that he could abandon the role and pass it on to someone else so that he could go on to lead a normal life as a civilian.

At times it seems like Bruce Wayne wants to give up, to throw in the towel and forget everything he has done. He is even willing to lose one of his closest friends when he reveals that he had surveillance of the entire city which Lucius thinks is despicable and he tells Bruce he will quit after completing his last task as long as these cameras and equipment exist. It is then that Bruce decides nothing will stand in his way and he is fated to live forever as Batman, a man who appears to have it all but really has nothing as the entire city has turned against him. A renegade, sure, but he is a man with a noteworthy cause and his only intention is to make the town safe for everyone else so they can continue to live their normal lives.
