Nintendo – Games and Consoles

In every walk of life, industry, profession, etceteras, there is at least one transformational event that is remembered as a turning point.  In the computer industry the launch of the Windows operating system transformed the way computers operate and helped shape the “personal computing” (PC) marketplace.  In video gaming, the launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985 truly transformed the gaming world.

The Nintendo system was widely heralded as a significant step-up over its predecessors with improved graphics, gameplay, storylines, options and ever-expanding reach.  The initial games quickly became legendary as everyone who owned them would come to spend thousands of hours playing.  Super Mario Brothers, credited as the game that helped launched Nintendo to its incredible heights, is to this day the highest selling video game of all time.  Mario has become a timeless icon of video gaming that will last forever.

Super Mario Brothers has evolved over time with more games and merchandise than perhaps any other game series in history.  Super Mario Brothers had two main sequels for the Nintendo and then a signature game for every subsequent console that was launched, such as Super Mario World (Super Nintendo) and Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64).

In addtion to Mario, several other games helped further Nintendo’s position as the world market leader in video games.  These games are the Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Castlevania, Contra and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!  The Legend of Zelda is legendary in a similar fashion to Super Mario; this series has games for each subsequent console released after NES and an incredible following among fans of the game.

After the original NES, new consoles were rolled out over time to keep up with the growing competition in the video game industry, primarily Sega, Sony and Microsoft.  The Super Nintendo Entertainment System was the rival for the popular Sega Genesis and is considered the most successful “16-bit” (graphics) system of all time.  The Super Nintendo was successful well into the next generation of gaming consoles as the graphics, gameplay and storylines from this console far exceeded the imagination of NES players.

The Nintendo 64 was next and revolutionary for its much improved graphics over previous versions.  Instant classic video games for the 64 such as Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time helped propel its success, however it had a fierce competitor in the Sony Playstation.  The Playstation had greater storage capacity, discs instead of cartridges and more in-depth gaming than any of its predecessors.  As a result, Nintendo launched the Nintendo Gamecube to meet the competition.  The Gamecube performed ok but was facing a steep uphill battle against the Sony Playstation 2 and the Microsoft Xbox, which quickly gained market share.

Nintendo once again reinvented themselves under the mounting pressure of this competition with the release of the Nintendo Wii console.  The Wii has completely changed gaming, giving unprecedented control of characters in the game to the user, who can drive the motion of the characters with their own motion.  The Wii initially outperformed the highly anticipated Sony Playstation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360, which was a surprise to many.

Nintendo is an unmistakeable brand name, and you should display your membership in the Nintendo community with a fantastic retro t-shirt.  A Nintendo t-shirt will invoke memories of all the Nintendo games and is sure to spark debates about favourite all time games among those who see your t-shirt.
